Packie Bonner to publish memoirs in World Cup anniversary year

IRISH goalkeeping legend Packie Bonner has committed to penning his memoirs 25 years after he helped his home nation reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

A national hero and Celtic’s most capped player, Bonner signed with the club in 1978 and went on to provide the last line of defence for the team on a record 641 occasions.

Playing alongside the likes of Tommy Burns, Paul McStay, and Danny McGrain, he helped the club secure victory on many occasions – including winning four Scottish titles, three Scottish cups and one Scottish League Cup – during his lengthy career.

He also featured in Ireland’s most celebrated national squad, under the tutelage of Jack Charlton, lining out for the 1990 Fifa World Cup in Italy.

His book The Last Line, which will be published by Ebury Press in October, sees Bonner chart that illustrious career in his own words for the first time.

“This is a very special year, as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Republic of Ireland reaching the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup and I felt the time was right to record some of my memories from that wonderful time as well as looking back on my career as a whole, both with Celtic and my country,” Bonner said this week.

‘I am delighted that Ebury will be helping me to chart my journey from the northwest coast of County Donegal to the world stage,” he added.

Regarding the impending publication, Ebury’s Andrew Goodfellow said: “It’s a privilege to be publishing a true legend of the game and we look forward to bringing all those iconic memories back to life for Ireland and Celtic fans everywhere.”
