IRISHMAN Anthony Stokes could be heading for the exit door at Celtic following public criticism from manager Ronny Deila.
Stokes was left out of the Celtic squad for Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League qualifiers, but Deila suggested he got what he "deserved" for not putting the effort in during training.
“Anthony was left out because we found others better, so he has to fight to get back into the team again,” said the Norwegian, who is beginning his second season in charge at Parkhead.
“I should hope he’s not happy as everyone should be angry if they don’t play but we’re a team with teamwork and you get what you deserve from how you play in training and matches.”
The 27-year-old, who has nine caps for the Republic of Ireland, has failed to build on his potential since moving to the Bhoys from Hibernian in 2010.
Stokes is one of only two Irishmen in the current Celtic squad, with 19-year-old fringe player Eoghan O'Connell being the other.
O’Connell, who has been capped at Under-19 level for the Republic, played three league games for Celtic last season and will be hoping for more opportunities at centre-half this term.
