Young Irish woman suffers horrific injuries after man lashes out in unprovoked attack

A YOUNG Irish woman has suffered horrific injuries after a man lashed out in an unprovoked attack.

Shanan Reid McDaid, an 18 year old student from Co Donegal, was attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning about 3am on October 15, in Letterkenny.

Speaking to Seán O'Rourke on RTÉ, Shanan said: "Last Sunday I was out with my friends and we were waiting for a taxi but I had to go to the bathroom so they waited at the side of the building for me.

"When I was coming back up, I noticed that a man was following me, but I didn't pay any attention to it because he just looked normal.

"He was calling me like a slut and a b*tch, but that was it and I kept walking.

"I got to the front of the building, and he was standing in the middle of the road still calling me a slut and a b*tch so I walked back to ask what his problem was but I didn't get to say a word because after he hit me once and I fell straight away.

"He started hitting me while I was on the ground then he ran off, I'm not sure which way he went or who he is.

"At the time, it was sore and I didn't know if he was going to stop. I was lying on the ground thinking this could be it.

"I've never met the man before, didn't speak to him, I don't know what his reason for it was.

"My friends were around the corner, this was just at the entrance to a car park off the main road in Letterkenny."

After Shanan reached her friends, a good samaritan stopped in the street to drive them to hospital.

The young woman suffered numerous injuries in the attack including a broken nose, chipped teeth, cuts to her head and her face is 'puffy and bruised.'

"I'm definitely getting better everyday," she said. "But I'm still sore, and my teeth will take a while to heal."

The man is described as 5'9 between the ages of 30-40 with light brown hair and a Donegal or Northern Irish accent.
