Woman, 60s, killed by car while out walking in north-west Ireland

A FEMALE pedestrian aged in her 60s has died after being struck by a car in rural Co. Donegal.

The woman was killed on the R238 Buncrana-Clonmany road in Umricam, outside Buncrana at about 9.45pm yesterday night.

She was rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her identity has not yet been released until all relatives have been informed.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which occurred close to Clonmany's well-known North Pole Bar.

The scene has been preserved to allow a Garda forensics team to carry out a forensic examination this morning.

The R238 remained closed overnight but is expected to reopen later.

This is the fourth person to lose their life on a Co. Donegal's road so far this year.

The tragedy comes just days after a man from Derry, Emmett McClelland, was killed after being struck by a car in the small village of Bridgend.

Mr McClelland was on a night out with friends on Saturday evening at the nearby 19th Hole Bar when he died shortly before midnight.

A man was arrested but later released without charge while a file is processed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
