‘We love you mam’ – Irishman, 54, charged with murder of his wife in Britain as children pay tribute

AN Irishman has appeared in court in Wales charged with the murder of his wife.

Paul Martin Jordan, 54, appeared before Mold Crown Court on August 4 after the death of his estranged wife Elizabeth 'Betty' Jordan earlier this week.

Nursing home worker Mrs Jordan, 53, was found seriously injured at a property in Bangor in North Wales on Monday morning, July 31, and later died in hospital.

Mr Jordan was remanded in custody by Judge Eleri Rees after he spoke only to confirm his address and date of birth and that he preferred proceedings in English.

The judge fixed a plea hearing for October 4.

A trial – expected to last two weeks – will begin on January 29 next year, at either Mold Crown Court or nearby Caernarfon Crown Court.

Mr Jordan is originally from Ireland and is known locally as ‘Paul Irish’, according to Wales Daily Post.

He is well-known in the community and was formerly a director of the Partneriaeth Maesgeirchen Partnership, a local community organisation.

On Thursday, Mrs Jordan’s children released a touching tribute to their mother, saying she was “naturally caring, kind and selfless”.

They said: “Nothing was ever too much for Mum to help anyone in need and she always refused any gesture in return.

“She never passed judgement and treated everyone as her own.

“She was truly loved by family, friends, work colleagues and all who had the pleasure and privilege of meeting her.

“We are so very proud to be able to call her our mother, best friend and biggest role model in our lives. She will live on in our hearts forever and we will ensure that our memories of her will live on for as long as we live.”

They added: “To our beloved Mam, we adore you, we treasure you and we appreciate all that you did to ensure that we had the best in life.

“You made a massively brave decision at such a young age to move over to Wales to ensure that we had the best in life and we will forever be grateful for all that you did for us.”

Mrs Jordan’s children also spoke of their appreciation to the emergency services for their “utmost respects and courtesy in our time of need.”

“For that no words can ever describe our gratitude for all involved,” they said.

In a statement, DCI Brian Kearney of North Wales Police said: “Despite an individual being charged with murder the increased Police presence in Maesgeirchen will continue for community reassurance and a point of contact for anyone to provide further information.

“Detectives from the Investigation Team will also continue to conduct inquiries locally.

“I am very grateful to our local community for the help we have received and I’d reiterate my appeal that should anyone have any information that will help us fully understand the sequence of events that led to the death of Mrs Jordan’s to contact the police.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 101.
