AN IRISH DJ has received a wave of support after revealing he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Gareth O'Callaghan, who presents a weekday show on Classic Hits 4fm, announced the news late on Monday.
After first putting his symptoms down to stress, O’Callaghan went for a check up, after which he was given the news.
The bestselling author and former RTÉ 2fm DJ revealed that opening up about the illness has helped him come to terms with the diagnosis.
“I have been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, and it's been a very difficult time since being given the diagnosis,” said O’Callaghan on Facebook.
“But life goes on. And that's what I wanted to say here over these past few days; and now I’ve said it and it’s not so intimidating anymore.
“I’m not sure what to write just now because I still occasionally wake up in the middle of the night thinking that it’s all a bad dream. But then I realise it’s not unfortunately.
"I have it and it’s here to stay.”
He added: “There’s not much more I can write here just for now about this unexpected news, other than to say I was devastated when I was told, but we’re slowly coming to terms with it.”

Parkinson's disease is a long-term degenerative disorder that damages the brain, causing involuntary shaking and slow movement.
It is caused by a loss of nerve cells in the brain.
While there is no known cure, treatment is available to reduce the main symptoms and increase quality of life.
