Two men arrested under Terrorism Act after van stopped in Northern Ireland

TWO MEN have been arrested under the Terrorism Act in Lurgan, Co. Armagh after police officers discovered a number of items in a van.

The arrests, made by detectives from the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit under section 41 of the act, followed a search of the van the pair were travelling in at Levin Road in Lurgan last night.

Section 41 of the Terrorism Act allows a constable to arrest someone he or she reasonably suspects of being a terrorist, without having to obtain a warrant.

The men are believed to be aged 29 and 48.

Items from the vehicle were seized for further examination and follow-up searches took place in Lurgan today.

Detective Inspector Fitzpatrick of the PSNI told the Belfast Telegraph: "The van was stopped at Levin Road in Lurgan at around 10 pm last night [Wednesday] and a number of items were seized for further examination.

"A number of follow up searches have been carried out in the Lurgan area today [Thursday]. Both men are currently at the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station where they are being questioned.”
