Teenager dead and three injured after car flies into ditch in rural Ireland

A TEENAGER has died and three others have been injured following a horror road crash in rural Co. Limerick this morning.

The 17-year-old male was fatally injured when the car he was travelling in struck a ditch at Tubberyquinn, Ballyneety shortly after midnight.

Three other men who were travelling in the black 05-D registered Mazda 6 were also injured – one of them seriously.

They are being treated at University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí said the incident has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman (GSOC) due to an “earlier interaction" between the crashed vehicle and officers.

They are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardai are investigating a fatal road traffic collision at Tubberyquinn, Ballyneety, Co Limerick on the March 20, 2018.

“The single car crash happened shortly after 12 midnight.

“A 17-year-old male was fatally injured and three other males were injured, one seriously, when the black, 05 D registered Mazda 6, they were travelling in, struck a ditch.

“The incident has been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission as a result of earlier interaction between the crashed car and Gardai.

“Gardai at Roxboro Road Garda Station are asking witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information, to contact them on 061 214340.”
