Storm Imogen leaves cars crushed and lorries overturned onboard Irish Ferries ship

THE wrath of Storm Imogen caused serious damage to an Irish Ferries ship that was stranded off the southern English coast.

Upon arriving at Dublin Port on Tuesday the extent of the damage was revealed, with cars crushed and overturned, and the contents of other vehicles, including lorries, damaged and spilling out onto the ferry floor.

More than 100 passengers were aboard the Epsilon ship bound for Dublin, which sustained an estimated few thousand Euro worth of damage to its cargo.

The 2011 Italian built ship had sailed from Cherbourg in France on Sunday, February 7 at 5.30pm, when it hit winds of a constant 60–knots with gusts of 105–knots at times.

The latest in a string of named storms to batter Britain and Ireland has seen winds of up to 160km per hour swept across Ireland and southern parts of Britain.

One observer said it was most likely the 'worst ever' crossing from France and suggested it was 'lucky the ship was not lost'.

The vessel was forced to take shelter at sea in waters off the north Devon coast, where it remained until the orange weather warning over the Irish Sea was lifted on Tuesday.
