Storm Emma: First flight cancellations confirmed as Heathrow ground dozens of flights to Ireland

THE first of what are expected to be a significant amount of Irish flight cancellations due to Storm Emma have just been announced.

British Airways has announced it is cancelling the majority of flights out of Heathrow to Dublin today.

The decision will affect a number of Irish passengers in and out of Dublin Airport this afternoon and this evening.

A spokeswoman for the airline urged customers that the effect on Irish bound flights was “minimal”.

Following advice from Heathrow air traffic control, BA agreed to run a reduced schedule “to help mitigate the effects of the difficult weather conditions”, she said.

Elsewhere, Ryanair have also cancelled a number of flights in western Europe due to the adverse weather conditions.

Aer Lingus confirmed four flights between Dublin and Heathrow have been cancelled so far this week, as the extreme weather begins to affect air travel.

This afternoon, the Irish airline cancelled a further three of its flights from London to Dublin.

An Aer Lingus spokesperson said it “regrets the inconvenience caused to our guests,” who will be accommodated on the next available flight.

Both Cork Airport and Shannon Airport have not yet announced any flight cancellations for Tuesday or Wednesday.

Dublin Airport have said that they are monitoring the situation but as of yet they have no plans to cancel any flights.

Nevertheless, BA have now cancelled at least three flights from Dublin to London.

The major airlines are urging customers flying over the coming days to keep a close eye on social media and their websites for any updates.
