Motorists fined in Ireland for trying to film crash aftermath on mobile phones

GARDAÍ have hit out at so-called rubberneckers after revealing four people were fined for trying to record a crash in Co. Cork.

Officers revealed the fines were handed out after the incident on the M8 near Watergrasshill this week.

Four drivers were issued with on-the-spot fines for holding mobile phones while driving.

A fifth driver received a fine after stopping on the opposite carriageway to get a better look at the accident.

Posting on the Garda Southern Region Facebook account, they said such actions could hamper the emergency services and put more lives at risk.

"Unfortunately, we are all familiar with scenes like this,” they posted.

“Please don't feel the need to film it. Besides, the BAFTAs were last week.

"Emergency Services need room to work in dangerous environments and depend on other road users to act responsibly.

“Some motorists felt compelled to film and photograph what was going on.”

The post added: “Do not endanger yourselves, other road users or the Emergency Services trying to help those involved.”
