A man has died on the road in Mayo

A COLLISION between a car and a truck has left two people seriously affected.

One person has been left seriously injured and another dead following the incident in Swinford in County Mayo.

The crash between the two vehicles is believed to have occurred at 3.40pm in the small town of Carrabawn, Swinford.

The authorities were called to the scene of the incident and aided both motorists however the 61-year-old passenger of the car could not be saved.

According to Irish Mirror, the driver of the car, a man believed to be in his 20s was rushed to Mayo University Hospital.

The driver of the truck is said to be in a stable condition.

The scene of the incident has been sealed off pending a forensic examination.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said traffic could be expected in the area due to the nature of the incident: "The scene of the collision is expected to remain closed until noon tomorrow (Wednesday) to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators, local traffic diversions will remain in place."

They also appealed for any witnesses with information to come forward: "Anyone with information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station 094-9372080 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
