Man charged with murder of 20-year-old in West of Ireland town

A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 20-year-old in the West of Ireland at the weekend.

Richard McLoughlin, 31 and with an address in City Gate Apartments, Connolly Street, Sligo was charged with the murder of Jimmy Loughlin at a house in Sligo town.

Mr McLoughlin appeared at Donegal Town District Court this morning after he was charged at Ballymote Garda Station at 8.48pm last night.

He did not reply to the charge after caution.

Defence solicitor Gerry McGovern said the defendant was currently on medication and asked for his prescription to be made available to him in custody.

RTÉ reports that Judge Kevin Kilraine was asked by barrister Keith O'Grady to direct an urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation, which he did.

Free legal aid was also granted.
