Man, 27, charged with infamous gun murder of Irish policeman Adrian Donohoe

A MAN has been charged with the notorious murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe in Co. Louth five years ago.

Aaron Brady, 27, of New Road, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, appeared before Dundalk District Court last night.

He was charged with the murder of Det Garda Donohoe under Section 3 of the Criminal Justice Act 1900.

Replying to the charge on Sunday evening, Mr Brady said: "I strongly deny any involvement in the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe."

Judge John Coughlan remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday, and granted legal aid.

Det Garda Donohoe was a married father-of-two, and his widow Caroline was in court for the brief hearing.

The 41-year-old was shot dead in the line of duty outside Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, near Dundalk, on January 25, 2013.

Over the course of their five-year investigation, Gardaí worked alongside police in the United States to track down his killer.

It is understood that a number of members of the US Department of Homeland Security also attended Dundalk District Court last night, according to Independent.ie.

In recent months, US detectives appealed to members of the Irish community in Boston, Massachusetts, to come forward with information about Det Garda Donohoe’s murder.

Posters had been distributed around Boston offering a “substantial reward” for information leading to an arrest.
