Man, 23, stabbed to death in St Patrick's Day attack at west of Ireland nightclub

A TEENAGER has been arrested after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death at a nightclub in Co. Clare.

The 19-year-old man was arrested following the attack at the Shannon Knights Night Club in Shannon town at around 2am on Sunday morning.

He was taken to Shannon Garda Station, where he is being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Another man, aged 22, was injured in the incident but his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

The victim has been named locally as Jamie Higgins, who along with his injured friend had travelled from Limerick to Shannon for their St Patrick’s night out.

He sustained knife wounds to the upper part of his body and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A number of areas outside the nightclub were sealed off by Gardai following the incident.

Officers of the Garda Technical Bureau recovered a weapon during their examination of the scene yesterday.

Gardai, who are waiting to interview Mr Higgins’s friend, have appealed for witnesses to the incident.

In a statement, a Garda spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information, and in particular we would like to speak to anyone who was in the Shannon Knights nightclub on the night of the 17/18."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Shannon Garda Station on 061 365 900, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
