London Mayor Sadiq Khan: We must embrace resilient spirit of the Irish to overcome Brexit challenges

THE Mayor of London says embracing the resilient spirit shown by the Irish in Britain over the decades will help the country through the Brexit challenges that lie ahead.

Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan said now is not the time for division and urged poeple to remain open-minded and outward-looking.

The Mayor's comments came a day before Britain's Prime Minister announced she would officially begin the process of Britain’s exit from the European Union next week.

Downing Street announced yesterday that on March 29, Theresa May will write to the European Council to notify them that Article 50 has been triggered.

The Mayor also went on to praise the Irish for contributing to the prosperity of London, particularly in very difficult times - such as during the Troubles and post World War II.

"There are some who try to divide our communities, there are some who try and say post Brexit we're going to stop being open-minded, outward-looking," he said during his St Patrick's Festival address at Trafalgar Square on Sunday.

"What has the Irish community shown? It has shown its resilence, it has shown its sense of humour, it has shown its creativity.

"And that's the message we have to send at this difficult time," he added.
