Irish night in Leicester raises £6,000 for cancer charity

THE Irish in Leicester have donated more than £6,000 to the Macmillan cancer charity. Supporters raised the impressive total at the second Annual Irish Night, held at the Nottingham Oddfellows club.

Local woman Carmel Mannix, who hails from Co. Mayo, launched the event in 2013 after her father was diagnosed with cancer. Having received treatment he is now in remission.

This year’s event was sponsored by fellow Mayo native Mick Melvin. Mr Melvin has been receiving treatment for rectal cancer at the Leicester Royal Infirmary for the last six months and has recently finished his course.

The cheque, one of the single biggest fundraising amounts received by Macmillan in Leicester in 2014, was presented to the charity at the Leicester Cancer Information centre by Carmel and Mick, who brought along his family and his consultant Dr Osman.

The money will support the charity’s work in Leicester with people living with cancer.
