Irish in New Orleans fundraise for injured Limerick garda

THE IRISH community in New Orleans is rallying behind the family of a Limerick garda who was seriously injured in a shooting last week.

Brian Hanrahan, 32, who was on holiday with his father at the time, was shot twice during an attempted robbery at 5.40am local time at the junction of New Orleans Street and North Tonti Street.

In response to the attack, a number of fundraisers have been organised both in Ireland and in the US to help cover the unexpected travel and hotel expenses, and hospital fees that the family face whilst in New Orleans.

Funds continue to be raised to support the family, of which The Irish Post has contributed $500.

The New Orleans Irish community hosted a fundraising event on Saturday at The Irish House restaurant in the city and have raised $1,215 to date through a website dedicated to supporting Mr Hanrahan’s recovery.

Head Chef at the venue, Matt Murphy, said that there has been a great response to date: “From the farmer who brought all the vegetables from his garden to sell and get the donation, to the ice cream company who has offered a month’s supply of ice cream as a raffle prize. We started our own little slogan ‘feels good to care’...”

Mr Murphy who has visited Mr Hanrahan in hospital, added: “He was in good spirits, I think he had just come out of operation that morning. He looked well, of course in shock.”

American police officers have also donated to the cause, raising nearly €2,000 for Mr Hanrahan’s family.

His wife Emma was presented with the money by the New Jersey State and Port Authority Police Benevolent Associations.

Donations are still being welcomed and can be made at www.gofundme.com/GardaBrianHanrahan
