Irish Government: 'Peace process must not become bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations'

THE Irish Government has said that the peace process in Northern Ireland must not become a bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations.

A collective statement was released earlier this morning on behalf of the Irish Government ahead of the release of the British Government's border plans later today.

Both the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney called on the British Government to provide 'greater clarity' on its approach to the negotiations.

"The emphasis on the priority areas identified by the Government, including the Common Travel Area, the Good Friday Agreement, North/South cooperation and avoiding a hard border, is welcome.

"Protecting the peace process is crucial and it must not become a bargaining chip in the negotiations."
