Irish-American family of four killed in horror Wexford road crash named locally

THE family of four killed in a horrific road crash in Co. Wexford last night have been named locally.

Doug and Lily Alexander, both aged in their 70s, and their sons Doug Jr and Stephen, both in their 40s, died at around 6.30pm on Monday evening after colliding with an articulated lorry on the N25 road near New Ross.

The family, who had lived in the United States for a number of years, had rented their car from Shannon Airport after arriving to Ireland just hours earlier.

They travelled home to Ireland in order to attend the funeral of Lily’s sister at the time of their tragic deaths.

The cause of the crash is not yet known but it is understood that the driver of the rental vehicle – believed to have been one of the two sons – attempted to make a U-turn before colliding with the lorry.

The driver of the lorry and his passenger were not injured, but were treated for shock by paramedics.

Gardai said conditions on the road were good at the time of the incident.

Local residents in Co. Wexford have taken to social media to express their sympathies to the Alexander family.

One post read: “Very, very sad news at the mouth of Christmas, God bless their families tonight”.

While another said: “My thoughts are not only with the family but with the lorry driver during this terrible time. Rest in peace.”
