Indian man arrested over sexual exploitation of Irishwoman he ‘promised to marry for years’

A MAN has been arrested in India on charges of sexually exploiting an Irish woman he promised to marry for a number of years.

Vivek Awashti, 36, was apprehended in the northern Indian city of Rishikesh on Monday evening.

He was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by his former partner, a 48-year-old woman originally from Ireland.

She accused Awashti of sexually exploiting her between 2012 and 2016 after promising to become her husband.

The unnamed woman also accused him of refusing to return her a substantial amount of money he had borrowed when they were still together.

The complaint amounts to around 370,000 rupees (€4660/£4100).

According to India Today, Awashti has been charged under sections 376 (rape) and 420 (duping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
