Heartbroken students pay tribute to Irish teacher who died after car crash in Thailand

THE STUDENTS of an Irish teacher who died after a horror car crash in Thailand have paid tribute to their "great teacher".

John Malone, 39, originally from Co. Longford, was killed in a collision in the Chiang Rai province of northern Thailand on Tuesday night.

Mr Malone had been working as an English teacher with the The Learning Academy in Chiang Rai City for a number of years and was well-known in the local community.

According to the Chang Rai Times, several other people suffered injuries in the collision but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Staff and students at The Learning Acadamy paid tribute to the tragic Irish man, saying: “We have lost today one of our beloved teachers, John Malone.

"John was at the heart of TLC team, helping in every way with his usual smile and happy attitude. You will always be in our hearts. RIP John.”

One of his former pupils said: “I’m very glad that I learned so many things with you. I will appreciate them and I’m very lucky that you taught me.

"You are absolutely and truly a great teacher, you will always be in my memory."

Another former student said: “RIP teacher John. Didn’t think I’ll leave this. It happened so fast and we didn’t want it to happen. Thanks for everything you did for me John. You were the best teacher. In another life I will meet you again.”

While another said: “You were very kind to students, and you were lovely to all students.  Every student loves you. RIP John Malone.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that they are offering the family of the Longford town native consular assistance.
