Gardaí in Ireland arrest man after discovering woman being sexually assaulted in violent alleyway attack

A MAN in his 30s has been arrested after Gardaí arrived on scene while a violent sexual assault was ongoing in an alleyway in Ireland.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in Dublin’s north inner city.

A Portuguese woman was assaulted at around 3am in an alleyway at Parnell Place, Dublin 1 – near to the Rotunda Hospital.

It is believed the alarm was raised when concerned local residents heard what sounded like the screams of a woman.

Gardaí arrived on scene while the victim was still being attacked by the man.

He was arrested but later became ill and was brought to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

The man was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours, Gardaí said.

His period of detention has been delayed as a result of his hospital treatment.

The female victim was taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in the Rotunda Hospital, less than 100 meters from where the attack took place.

Gardaí cordoned off the scene at Parnell Place and a forensic examination has been carried out by a technical unit.
