Funeral for Irish Post co-founder Tony Beatty to take place next week

A DATE has been set for the funeral of Irish Post co-founder Tony Beatty, who passed away earlier this month.

The 80-year-old, who had battled multiple sclerosis since 1982, passed away at the Cedars Care Centre in New Barnet on May 2, where he had lived for nearly four years.

Irish Ambassador Dan Mulhall was among those who have paid tribute to the Waterford native, who was an accountant by trade and played a pivotal part in the founding of The Irish Post in 1970.

“I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Tony Beatty,” he said.

“From my own county of Waterford, Tony is acknowledged to have made an outstanding contribution to the Irish community in Britain not least in co-founding The Irish Post.”

He added: “The establishment of The Irish Post gave Irish people in Britain here an important voice more than 40 years ago and has served the Irish in Britain very well.

“It continues to play an important role today and the confidence and sense of community to be found among the Irish in Britain today is part of Tony Beatty’s legacy.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to Tony’s loved ones, friends and the wider Irish Post family.”

A memorial service for Tony will be held on Monday, May 16 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St George Church in Enfield.

Anyone who knew him is welcome to attend.

His burial will take place in Newtown, Kilmacthomas in Co. Waterford.
