Fresh hope as Berkeley survivor Aoife Beary leaves high dependency unit

A BERKELEY tragedy survivor is on the road to recovery it has been revealed.

Aoife Beary, 21, was seriously injured in the Berkeley balcony collapse in June.

Six students were killed and seven others injured along with Aoife as they celebrated her 21st birthday.

The balcony of the fourth floor apartment they were socialising in fell 40 feet to ground level.

Aoife, from Blackrock in Co. Dublin, was left with life-changing injuries following the accident.

Her family shared an update last night detailing Aoife’s progress.

Having spent the last 2 weeks in the high dependency unit, at last Aoife has started her rehabilitation programme at the brain injury unit in the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Rehab Facility. This will involve a daily schedule of physio, occupational and speech therapy at the Center, 6 days a week for the coming weeks. Her family remain by her side assisting and learning as well. Friends who stayed, in addition to those who have returned continue of call in on a daily basis to share the gossip and encourage her along. Everyone is so proud of her. This continues to be is a long path to recovery and Aoife knows there are so many people out there who are thinking of her and wishing her well.

Aoife’s most serious injury was to her head. Since the accident on June 16, she has had heart surgery and her other injuries have been closely monitored by the medical team in California.

Her family have been by her side since news broke of the tragedy.
