Family pay tribute to "loving family man" James Feeney who died after birthday assault

THE FAMILY of a man who died after an “altercation” in a Manchester pub, have paid tribute to the “loving family man”.

James Feeney died while out celebrating his 65th birthday on Sunday (May 1).

He had been in Ireland for a visit just days before his death.

Greater Manchester Police were called to a pub in Reed Hill, Rochdale, on Sunday evening at around 8.20pm after receiving reports that a 65-year-old man was unconscious after being assaulted.

Mr Feeney, who had "strong links" to Ireland, passed away a short time later.

Today his family issued a statement through Greater Manchester Police.

“Jimmy was a loving family man, his family were his life,” the statement read.

“His kindness and friendliness was known to everyone.

“Jimmy would steer away from trouble and enjoy life to the full. He loved horse-racing and football.

“This tragic event has left us all shocked, devastated especially as it happened during his 65th birthday celebrations.”

A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and has been bailed until September 4, 2016 pending further enquiries.

The circumstances surrounding Mr Feeney’s death have not yet been made clear.

Earlier today his wife Anne thanked people for all their help and support since his death last Sunday.
