DISABLED Republic of Ireland fan Jamie Monaghan has been selected to receive the ‘Medal of the City’ from the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, on behalf of his country.
Jamie attended each of Ireland’s four games at the tournament and captured the imagination of his fellow travelling supporters and the French public with his flamboyant wheelchair, which was fully decorated in his team’s colours.
He first attracted attention when his beloved ‘Jamie on Tour’ flag went missing from outside the mobile home he way staying in, sparking a nationwide search for his property.
When the flag could not be recovered, locals of Bordeaux rallied to provide Jamie with an exact replica of the original.
The heart-warming gesture made French newspapers and Jamie became a celebrated fan up and down the nation as he followed his team’s exploits.
Last week, the Mayor of Paris announced her decision to award fans of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with a medal to show their appreciation for their commendable behaviour throughout the tournament.
And Jamie has now confirmed, via Facebook, that he has been chosen to accept the award on behalf of the Republic fans, as below.
He'll be returning to France to receive the medal and will be documenting his journey via his Facebook page.
