Community in rural Ireland in shock over death of elderly man on farm

A COMMUNITY in rural Ireland is in shock following the death of an elderly man following an incident on his farm. 

Gardaí were called to the scene at Castlegrace, between Clogheen and Ardfinnan, in south Tipperary around 1.30pm yesterday afternoon.

It's understood the 66 year old man, named as Patsy Coffey, died after he fallen off bales on his own farm.

Mr Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to University Hospital Waterford for a postmortem examination and the Heath and Safety Authority are investigating.

People in the area are said to be devastated by the tragic death which occurred on his farm yesterday afternoon.

South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath told TippFM that the community is 'in shock.'

Mr McGrath said: "The mood is a complete devastation and shock. It's a tragedy, Patsy was so well liked, involved in so many community organisations.

"It's a massive blow to his wife and family, children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters and extended family.

"It's just such a shock that going about your routine farm work, and such a simple accident. It's a huge blow."
