Body of homeless woman found on street close to emergency shelter

GARDAí in Cork are investigating the death of a woman in her 40s whose body was found on a street in the city centre at around 11am this morning.

It is believed that the woman had been sleeping rough.

Gardaí do not believe at this stage that the cause of the woman's death is suspicious.

Her body has been removed to Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place later.

The woman's body was found close to the Anderson's Quay emergency shelter run by Cork Simon Community.

The woman is understood to have been a user of homeless services in Cork for a number of years, and had been interacting with homeless services in recent days also.

There were 282 adults in emergency accommodation in Cork at the end of October, according to the latest figures compiled for the Department of Housing.

It is the eighth death in the country of a person sleeping rough since late August and the third death of a person rough sleeping in Ireland in just over a week.
