Alan Shatter resigns from Irish Government

IRELAND'S Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has resigned from Government.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny told the Dáil this afternoon Mr Shatter had resigned after receiving Seán Guerin's report into allegations made by Garda whistleblower, Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

Mr Shatter has taken responsibility for a number of criticisms in the report levelled at the Department of Justice and as a result is stepping down.

The Guerin report is due to be published on Friday morning.

Mr Kenny said Mr Shatter’s output would stand the test of time and that the "hard hitting" report came out of concerns he had raised.

He said the brunt of the report deals with An Garda Síochána and to a lesser extent the Minister for Justice.

The report points out the inadequate response of the minister under his statutory function for independent analysis and it was in that respect he was resigning.
