'Numbness and shock' following death of a seven-month-old baby in Irish town

AN IRISH COMMUNITY is 'numb and in shock' following the tragic death of seven-month-old baby girl.

The infant, named locally as Chloe Fogarty, was found unresponsive in the back of a car on May 25, in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary.

A spokesman for An Garda Síochána told The Irish Post: "We are investigating an incident after gardaí were alerted to an unresponsive female infant.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the child was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick, where she passed away a short time later."

It's understood the infant was meant to be dropped at a creche that morning, but was instead left in the back of the car.

Temperatures in Co. Tipperary registered at 24 degrees on May 25.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Martin Browne told The Irish Post: "There was just complete numb and shock when it happened and less than 24 hours later it's still the same.

"It's something you hear about from other places but when it happens close to you it hits home.

"It's a complete tragic accident," Councillor Browne said. "It's a small area and everyone knows each other, so to have it happen to one of your own is just tragic."

A post mortem of the infants remains is expected to be carried out later today.
