Launch of new book on Irish in Manchester

ALAN Keegan and Danny Claffey will officially launch their third book ‘Irish Manchester Revisited’ on Friday, March 15 at the Chorlton Irish Club in Manchester.

The event, which is being sponsored by Guinness, will be one of the literary highlights of this year’s 2013 Manchester Irish Festival.

When asked about why he has brought out a third book – a work tracing the integration of Irish immigrants in Manchester – author Alan Keegan replied: “The last two books were such a success that they completed sold out and everyone kept asking us when we were going to bring out another.

"The timing could not have been better when the printers told us that they would be available in March. So we have put together a St Patrick’s weekend party at the Chorlton Irish club with lots of live entertainment as well as a short presentation by me and Danny. It should be a great way to start the festival weekend and I am looking forward to meeting up with all my old friends and relatives.”

Photographer Danny Claffey added: "It’s another collaboration between myself and Alan that shows the Manchester Irish at leisure and at sport, always enjoying themselves. It's an opportunity for people to take a trip down memory lane, you may see yourself, or your Grannie or one of your friends. We enjoyed compiling the book, and we hope you like reading it."

‘Irish Manchester Revisited’ is a photographic history of post-war Irish history, and in particular the Irish in Manchester. It covers among other areas, the second generation, the social, musical and sporting contribution of the Irish to the region.

The book is a collaboration between Alan Keegan (Broadcaster & University Lecturer at The University of Central Lancashire, Preston, in the School of Journalism, Media & Communication and on-pitch announcer at Manchester United Football Club) and Danny Claffey, (who has worked for over twenty seven years as a photographer for the Irish Post newspaper in the North West of England).

The event is free and features Irish stew and a special Guinness promotion followed by Irish club night 'Dirty Old Town' with The Reel Deal dance troupe, Shake the Barley and Donal Scally. It promises to be a very busy night and you are advised to arrive early if you want a good seat.
