Pictures: Northern Lights shine bright over northern parts of Ireland and Britain

LAST NIGHT was a treat for amateur photographers across Britain and Ireland, as the Northern Lights made an appearance in the skies.

The beautiful Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, is a natural display of lights in the sky caused by particles from the sun striking atoms in the Earth's atmosphere, causing them to emit light.

Usually visible in northerly countries - Iceland, Scandinavia and the Antarctic - British and Irish sky watchers can sometimes catch a glimpse.

Northern counties like Donegal, Down, Derry and Antrim all had reported sightings, while many parts of Scotland and the north of England were also treated to the display.

One Irishman, Donegal photographer Paul Doherty, even managed to capture the Northern Lights on video in a time lapse.
