Irish university becomes first in the country to introduce ‘napping pods’ for sleepy students

NOTHING beats a good old mid-afternoon nap, especially when you’ve been studying yourself into the ground.

Luckily for the folks at Maynooth University, their campus has become the first in Ireland to install ‘EnergyPods’ – which allow students to take a 20-minute power nap to maintain energy levels while studying.

Designed for high-pressure business environments, they are being leased to the university by MetroNaps UK and feature a privacy visor and built-in speaker system to block out surrounding distractions.

Two EnergyPods have been installed at the university library along with one at its access office.

It’s the result of the university’s MU Library Innovation Award 2017, in which 40 students submitted proposals on how to make Maynooth University Library a better place to study.

The winning idea was submitted by first-year Robotics student Brian Crinion, who was inspired by his long commute and busy schedule to work out a way to “recharge” during the day.

Dr Peter Robbins, Head of the EDEN Centre for Entrepreneurship, Design and Innovation at Maynooth, said: "The MU Library Innovation Awards challenge students to not only come up with bold ideas to improve Maynooth’s already excellent library facilities, but also to develop practical implementation plans.

“It is a chance to test skills that will be invaluable throughout both their academic and professional lives."

"It is a chance for students to prove their mettle when it comes to innovation, and it is wonderful to see a first-year student already developing winning concepts.

“Brian can be very proud of this achievement, and I have no doubt his idea will be of great benefit to Maynooth University students."

Imagine having one of these at work?!
