Seven Catholic priests turned away from British pub because staff thought they were a stag do

IT sounds like the beginning of a gag, but Seven Catholic priests really did walk into a bar… and it was no laughing matter.

A group of seminarians were in Cardiff over the weekend when they went to The City Arms pub to celebrate the ordination of Father Peter McClaren.

Thinking they were a gang of lads wearing fancy dress on a stag do, pub management initially asked the men to leave.

But staff realised their error and invited them to stay, even buying the men a round of drinks.

In a blog post, the Archdiocese of Cardiff said the priests had initially thought the bartender was joking when he mistook them for a stag party – but things worked out in the end.

“We’d like to thank The City Arms for being good sports through all of this and their kind gesture to our seminarians,” they said.

“Please note a number of our clergy, including the Archbishop of Cardiff, frequent your bar so don’t turf any more out please!”

The City Arms apologised for the misunderstanding and explained that it is pub policy to turn away large stag parties because there have been a number of issues with fancy dressed revellers.

“A slight misunderstanding from us but everyone was happy in the end,” the pub said on Twitter.

Thank God for that!
