Eric Cantona praises Irish football fans as he gives his take on Euro 2016 so far

EX-MANCHESTER United striker Eric Cantona has complimented Irish football fans at the Euro 2016 tournament.

In a video filmed by sports TV channel Eurosport before both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland bowed out of the competition at the weekend, Cantona said that the Irish fans were "the life of the party... singing for the police, putting babies to sleep, changing water into beer and serenading the ladies".

"They even know the end of Game of Thrones," he jokes.

Cantona also sang Northern Ireland's Will Grigg's on fire chant in tribute to the Northern Irish fans at the tournament.

The chant, which can be heard in the video below, was prompted by Northern Ireland striker Grigg being on form after scoring 25 goals for Wigan Athletic in England's third tier football division, League 1, last season.

Grigg was selected to be part of Northern Ireland's 23-man squad for the Euro 2016 tournament but he did not play.

Cantona also commented on the result of the EU Referendum in Britain, saying: "There is no sign of a Brexit yet at the EURO [2016 tournament]. My friends from the UK, I'm so sad you decided to leave us. What would I be without you? You made me who I am."

The ex-France international played for Manchester United from 1992 to 1997, scoring 88 goals in 201 appearances, according to footballdatabase.eu.

He currently features in TV advertisements for French beer Kronenbourg 1664.
