THE IRISH are no strangers to being described as British – over the past few months some of our biggest stars have been stripped of their nationalities by the media.
Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender and Hozier are just some of the Irish actors and singers to have recently been labelled British.
If you thought this was going to slow down – or even stop altogether – in 2016, think again.
Upcoming musical drama film Sing Street is as Irish as Irish can be, featuring renowned actors Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Jack Reynor as well as a host of newcomers.
Shot in Dublin city, the film tells the story of schoolboy Cosmo who starts a band to impress a girl.
But despite being shot on location in Dublin, and comprising an almost entirely Irish cast, Weinstein Films - the company promoting Sing Street in the US, tweeted about the film's "British rockers".
The company put out the controversial tweet after British band Coldplay played to millions of viewers at the Super Bowl 50 clash between the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
