A PACKED crowd supported Kathleen Carroll last weekend as she had her head shaved to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Kathleen, 54, has lung cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy, but took the opportunity to raise awareness of the illness. The event took place at the Greyfriars Social Club in Nottingham and £312.55 was raised Kathleen, who was raised in Co. Louth, was diagnosed in March this year, and has since had three sessions of intensive chemotherapy. Kathleen’s partner, Peter Hefketh, who is originally from Belfast, explained her motivation for doing this, saying: “She knows that Macmillan Cancer Support does a lot of good work and she wanted to help.” Among the many family members and friends that attended were her four sons and daughter, as well as Peter and his son Kevin, who cut her hair. Many of the people commented on how brave it was of Kathleen to have her hair shaved off in public for charity. Peter said: “On the day she coped brilliantly, yet since then she’s been really down because the chemo is really affecting her.” He added: “She is building herself up again now.” The Nottingham-based family wished to thank everyone who attended, including Paul Reddington and Kathleen Butler, who work at the club and organised the event. Kathleen also sent special thanks to her parents, Mary and Peter Carroll, who sent her best wishes along with a donation from her hometown of Carlingford in Louth. Anybody who wishes to help Kathleen’s cause can contact Macmillan Cancer Support on 020 7840 7840 or online at www.macmillan.org.uk.
