Virtuoso pianist in concert
10/16/2002 -
Prodigiously-talented Russian pianist Alexei Nabioulin, winner of the AXA Dublin International Piano Competition 2000, visits the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday 21st October at 8.30pm as part of Music Network’s 2002 Autumn Touring Season.
Alexei’s visit follows a sell-out solo appearance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin last year, and his return visit has been highly anticipated by music lovers in Ireland. Born in Norilsk, Siberia in 1978, Alexei began studying the piano at the age of five and gave his first recital at nine.
FILM CLUB
Linenhall Film Club’s next presentation is the compelling, gritty and enthralling “Code Unknown”, a French/Austrian film directed by Michael Haneke. Set in Paris, “Code Unknown” tracks a series of events that unfold following an incident that brings together a diverse set of characters: an actress whose boyfriend photographs the war in Kosovo; his brother, who has decided he no longer wants work on his father’s farm in the country; a Romanian immigrant begging on the street; and a deaf teacher of West African descent.
With many twists and turns that draw the viewer into webs of family, nationality, culture, economics, and politics, “Code Unknown” is a complex and fascinating drama of fragmented souls in a fragmented society, filmed in a style that borders on documentary, offering a meditation on the confluence of lives and cultures in modern Europe. “The most intellectually stimulating and emotionally provocative piece of European cinema of recent times.” - Richard Falcon, Sight and Sound
