The credit crunch has proven a window of opportunity for savvy firms that predicted the fallout of the crisis and the elements that could be capitalised on.

For North London accountants Evans Mockler an early eye on the impending recession saw them spot a valuable chance to grow their business - providing quality services allowing their clients to ride out the downturn with a little extra security as far as their finances were concerned.
Martin Mockler is one of three partners at the firm, which was part of the Beatty and Co company - set up by Irish Post co-founder Tony Beatty - until 1990, when Evans Mockler was founded.


Since then Mr Mockler quickly traversed the career ladder in the accountancy industry, seeing his name added to the breakaway firm's title in 1998.
This week the Birmingham-born, but Co Roscommon-raised accountant told the Irish Post why Evans Mockler has experienced growth despite the recession and continues to be the popular choice for Irish firms across Britain and Ireland.
"Our typical client would be owner-managed business, generally in construction or the property sector," the 45-year-old explained.
"They mostly would be first or second generation Irish, as has traditionally been the case, but we have had a new wave of clients as well over the last few years.
"That element has been quite unusual, but a lot of existing firms are coming over from Ireland to set up branches in Britain."
He added: "In the 50s and 60s you had unskilled labourers coming over from Ireland, but now you have businesses with infrastructures and overheads who were doing very well in Ireland but, now the music has stopped, now need to come and set up a division here."
While the recession back home has unexpectedly brought Evans Mockler new clients, they were slightly more prepared for the effects of Britain's economic downturn.
"Ironically for the last number of years we have been really busy," Mr Mockler, a former underage Gaelic footballer for Co Meath and London juniors, explained.
"Since 2008 onwards we have had a number of new clients, primarily, in our view, because when people saw business was good in the early and mid-part of the last decade they were not paying that much attention to what tax they were paying or whether the business was structured well.
"People really didn't pay think much about tax planning or the fees they were paying, but when the credit crunch hit we predicted it would be a good opportunity to grow the business as people had to start to pay attention to everything."
With referral and recommendations being the main source of new clients, the firm was quickly able to capitalise on the opportunity and introduce clients to the 'unique' Evans Mockler style of accountancy service provision.
"The quality of service we deliver at a reasonable price is what sets us apart from the competition," the father-of-four explained.
"We want to rise and fall on our performance and with a business largely buoyed by referrals and recommendations that is key.
"You can advertise and promote the business as much as you want, but if you don't deliver you are wasting your money."
He added: "Also, while historically accountants have been reactive rather than proactive, we focus on sitting down with our clients in advance of the year end or the following year and taking a holistic approach to their affairs.
" We look at potential business profits and tax bills, we look at personal affairs - which is a key issue people often tend to ignore - and we try to plan as opposed to react.
"Ultimately we are comfortable in our own skin regarding the level and quality of service we provide."
With 2012 approaching, for Evans Mockler the future seems bright and manageable: "Looking ahead, we would like to grow the business in a managed fashion," Mr Mockler added.
"But there is no point taking on new business for the sake of it or to the detriment of existing clients, that's just a complete waste of time, money and effort.
"We are more concerned with growing the business in a managed way and maintaining our high levels of service to existing and new clients."
