Sport Awards sponsored by Guinness

STARS of the sporting world turned out for the annual Irish Post Awards in London on September 8.

The glitzy affair honoured GAA sporting legend DJ Carey as well as the heroic Munster rugby union team.

The audience went wild as Kilkenny man DJ bulled onto the stage with great enthusiasm to accept his accolade.

He was presented with the Sports Hall of Fame Award as voted by hundreds of readers.

A quiet man away from the media glare, DJ’s fierce on-field competitiveness masks a genial, easy-going personality which has made him one of hurling’s greatest ambassadors on and off the field.
No player in hurling history has been honoured more than DJ Carey and proud sponsors Guinness were more than happy to recognise that.

The Sporting Achievement of 2006 Award went to the Munster rugby team.

After 11 years, six semi-finals and countless near-misses Anthony Foley’s band of Irish warriors were finally crowned European champions.

It was a triumph that provoked celebrations on both sides of the Irish Sea when the cup was lifted on that famous night at the Millennium Stadium.

Suffice to say each man played a part in the historic triumph and two players, Jerry Flannery and Ian Dowling, turned out to collect the award on behalf of the champions.
